The county surveyor is part of Oregon's record system
ORS Chapter 209 describes county surveyor duties and survey-record custody. Prior surveys, corner records, and county indexes may be central to the assignment. Ask the firm which county records it expects to research and whether review charges are included.
Filing is not just office paperwork
ORS 92 includes requirements for filing survey maps and plats in specified circumstances. A proposal should say whether the work is expected to produce a filed survey map, a partition or subdivision document, or an unfiled design product. Those outputs should not share an unexplained price label.
Oregon field conditions belong in the request
- Forest, brush, steep slope, rock, snow, coast, river, wetland, locked roads, and remote travel.
- Deed, prior survey, county survey number, corner record, easement, and adjoining information.
- Fence, sale, dispute, partition, permit, topo, flood, or commercial title purpose.
- Corners, one line, full perimeter, improvements, elevations, or construction points.
- Filed map, legal description, digital file, permit plan, or ALTA/NSPS map.
Water and hazard maps are planning inputs
Oregon DOGAMI's HazVu helps users review mapped hazards. It does not establish a property boundary or tell a surveyor what a permit agency needs. If a coastal, landslide, flood, or river project prompts the survey, obtain the exact required line, elevation, or plan content.
Compare what happens after the crew leaves
Confirm monument setting, line staking, county review, filing, recorder charges, revisions, digital delivery, and return visits. Ask separately for the field window and final map date.
